COURSE DESCRIPTION: This
course is an introduction to computer terminology, hardware and application
programs for management information systems.
Students are introduced to business, industry and education applicat=
ions
of popular software using spreadsheets, word processors, and presentation
software. “Hands on” experience is
provided through student use of open lab.

COURSE=
OBJECTIVES: At
the completion of this course you will be able to:

Understand what a computer =
is and
its major components (Input, Processing, Output, and Storage devices).
§ =
Understand and explain the
functions of each of the computer’s major components.
§ =
Understand and define the c=
ommon
computer terminology.
§ =
Operate Windows and use its
interface.
§ =
Use a web browser to access
sites, follow hyperlinks and search for information on a given topic.

Use a word processor such a=
s Word
to create, edit, format, and print documents.
§ =
Use spreadsheet software su=
ch as
Excel to enter, store, display, print and process data, including the use of
functions and formulas.

Use presentation software s=
uch as
PowerPoint to create a basic slide presentation.
COURSE ACTIVITIES: All students will be required to do the course l=
ab
assignments covering: Computer Concepts, Internet Surfing and Email, Micros=
oft
Windows, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft PowerPoint.

All CSN students are allowed 4 hours of free tutoring per one credit=

coursework. Students enrolled in I=
S101
are entitled to 12 hours of free tutoring.

METHOD OF EVALUATION: Through the course of the
class students will be given the opportunity to collect up to 600 points as
follows:
Tests – 5 @ 100 points each – 400 Total (the lowest test grade will be dropped) <= o:p>
Assignments/In
class work – 5 topics @ 40 points each – 200 total
The grade distribution will=
be as
follows:
540 to 600 points – A
520 to 539 points – B+
480 to 519 points – B
460 to 479 points – C+
420 to 459 points – C
400 to 419 points – D+
360 to 399 points – D
0 to 359 points – F
MAKE UP TESTS: If a student misses a test, make up test=
s will
not be given for any reason. Howev=
er,
the lowest of the five test grades will be dropped, and missing a test will
automatically make that missed test the lowest test grade. If a student knows in advance they will=
miss
a test, they may be able to arrange to take the test at a different time.
ASSIGNMENTS:
Assignments are due at the beginning of the class. Being absent from a class does not chan=
ge
this. If a student is unaware of an
assignment due to being absent, the assignment is still considered late.
LATE ASSIGNMENTS:<=

Assignments will be accepted up to two classes late with a 50% point
deduction. The instructor may waiv=
e the
point deduction if the student has contacted the instructor prior to the due
date to discuss the situation. Late
assignments will not be accepted after the official end of the class.

You are expected to have read and understood the current issue of the student handbook (publish= ed by Student Services) regarding student responsibilities and rights, and the intellectual property policy, for information about procedures and about wh= at constitutes acceptable on-campus behavior.
